When the need for housing forced people to develop abandoned industrial buildings, a loft-style appeared with elements of industrial premises and objects made of ferrous metal. On the shores of a lake in Idaho, Olson Kundig Architects have built a brand new, distinctive home in this adaptable style.
Mountain Residence is the charm of nature of wooded steep mountains, clear water and simple, slightly rough forms of the facade and flat roof. The architects not only erected the building, but inscribed it in the nature of the coast, using the slope and the opening view.
Deciduous shrubs have already begun to acquire an autumn color. But the pines around are majestic and their branches turn bright green, hitting the strip of light. The walls of the house are straight, lined with large light gray bricks. The flat roof is separated around the entire perimeter by a glass canopy and floats in the air. This gives the structure a graceful look, smoothing out rough lines.
The front part of the façade is entirely made of glass, inserted into small thin frames, and it glows pleasantly in the evening with a yellowish light. Trees and a dark sky are visible through the upper windows. The roof is trimmed with wide boards at the bottom and forms a canopy over the entrance with its ledge.
The house in the forest has only a small concrete area in front of the door and two narrow paths of concrete slabs leading to it. The rest of the site is natural landscaping.
The outer wall is an original structure that rotates around the central axis of a large metal frame and opens the exit to the slope leading to the shore. From the living room you can admire the magical view of the lake of the Lunar Craters group. This is the nickname for the chain of reservoirs that are almost round in shape and have high rocky shores.
Maintaining the style, the walls inside are not plastered. The frames are made of black metal I-beams of different sections, the floor is cement. Upholstered furniture from designers is made in the form of a set of rectangular pillows, stacked on pallets instead of a base.
The area in front of the living room overlooks the lake. You can see the bow of the boat and the calm water surface surrounded by wooded slopes. The sun is just rising, the light fog has not had time to dissipate. Even the stone on the porch has a long shadow. All this beauty is visible from the house, framed by concrete walls, glass and iron.
A small bedroom on the second floor is separated by a glass partition from the lobby. The opening in the wall is closed by sliding shutters along the guides. Through the stained glass windows in metal frames, the lake and the opposite shore can be seen from the bed.
Opening mechanism for the huge facade frame. A steering wheel with a handle for easy rotation drives a chain in a huge semicircle using tapered sprockets and a thin shaft. A brake lever is located on the side, which fixes the segment in the desired position and does not allow it to turn independently. All of this is set on a brick wall.
The dining table stands on a leg. The top is made of one piece lacquered smooth board. Bar stools are painted metal. The structure of the legs is assembled from a profile and rods. I-beam wall and ceiling beams that are not even painted. There is no ceiling and the floorboards of the upper floor are visible.
There are a bar and a TV screen under the bedroom. You can watch news and sports while sitting in deep chairs with drinks, or just chat with friends.
The upholstery of the chair resembles stamped metal sheets, the same as on the original staircase to the third floor. The brackets are mounted in a thick iron pipe, which stands on the rolled sheet instead of the floor and serves as a chimney hood.
The entrance door moves along the wall on suspended rollers. Lighting wires run directly over the ceiling beams. The main finishing material for all surfaces of the premises is polished and varnished wood. The unique pattern of light wood is clearly visible.
House in the evening from the side. Mountain Residence does not have standard doors, this iron one is only two stories high and stands at an angle to the wall. A wooden staircase is visible behind the threshold, and outside there is a small platform and steps of flat stones towards the backyard.
Through the steps you can see the dining table and the end of the living room sofa. The fences from the bottom go into the bedroom wall and the railings go into the interior of the house.
The entire first floor is heated by a large fireplace, which is adapted for gas and solid fuel. In this case, firewood is burning. The hearth is made of sheets of 10 mm rolled steel welded into a large-diameter pipe and a door is cut out by an autogenous machine, fixed on ball hangers. The designers deliberately left it with white paint markings and a black surface. If desired, you can turn on the built-in burner and heat the entire house, since the metal structure and the hood pass through all three floors.
At the same time, the fireplace serves as a divider of the large total area of the first floor into functional areas. Behind him on the right are chairs and coffee tables in front of the TV and minibar. This place is additionally allocated by a carpet with a long pile. To the left is the kitchen and the dining room in front of it. In front of the open mouth of the stove are the living room sofas.
The second and third floors seem to be suspended in the space of rough brick walls. Contrast of rough gray material and smooth gloss of polished wood. There is a large piece of granite on the concrete area in front of the house.
Steps made of flat shale stones lead to the water. They are fenced on both sides by large boulders. When viewed from the pier, the house and sun loungers with light tables on the beach seem to be representatives of different worlds. The calm water reflects everything on the shore.
